Captivating Virtual Instruction for Training – Intelligence Architecture (CVIT – IA) is a single-player 2D simulation designed to familiarize new Soldiers with the structure of military intelligence operations. This application was meant to supplement in-class instruction.
The sponsor’s primary goal was to build a habit of asking for help when needed while also encouraging self-sufficiency through knowledge of doctrine. I designed an untimed experience with the intent of providing a safe place to make mistakes and closely replicating the “first day on the job” feel.
During the simulation, users fill the role of a particular team member and receive a mission to complete. They then click the appropriate sequence of people and systems. The fewer clicks it takes the player to accomplish the mission the higher their score. After 30 seconds of inactivity, they are urged to use the hint system through an encouraging prompt by their in-game mentor.
To assist players while encouraging critical thinking, I used a tiered hint system incorporating some light Socratic method. The first hint provides only minimal assistance but is not counted against the score. The second and third hints provide increasingly detailed information but at increasing penalty.
